Sapphires are one of the four precious gems along with Diamonds, Emeralds and Rubies. What little people know is that Sapphires and Rubies are both Corundum only their colour classifies them as different stones. The presence of Titanium and Iron give Sapphires its rich blue colour.
Blue sapphires were a holy stone to the catholic church and to Ancient Persians, who believed they made the sky blue with their reflections. A great poet once described the sapphire as 'the blue of a clear sky just minutes after sundown.'
The word sapphire comes from the Latin 'Sapphiru' and Greek 'saphiros' both meaning 'blue' however depending on their trace element content Sapphires come in a rainbow of colors: blue, yellow, green, orange, pink, purple. Pinkish-orange peach like sapphires known as Padparadschas are considered amongst the rarest.
